German prepositions with the dative.

A preposition decides the case of the noun after it, and mit, zu, bei, von always take the Dativ.

The three preposition groups

Every German preposition belongs to a specific group. Some prepositions always demand the Dativ, some always take the Akkusativ, and nine two-way prepositions can take either case depending on meaning.

Dative prepositions on the move

When describing travel and mobility, fixed dative prepositions change the following article. Masculine der and neuter das change to dem, feminine die changes to der, and plural die changes to den.

Preposition and article contractions

In daily speech and writing, prepositions often merge with the definite articles dem, der, and das. These shortened forms are standard in German.

Exceptions to remember

  • Going home is a fixed idiom using nach without an article, whereas being at home uses zu. Ich fahre jetzt nach Hause.
