Why a film you already know

Put on a German film at A2 and the unknown words come fast. Across the films below, 45% of the words a learner has to learn, counted each time they are said, sit above A2. Stopping to look each one up breaks the scene, and after a few pauses the story is gone.

That's why most titles here are German dubs of films you have probably seen, like The Shawshank Redemption or The Dark Knight. You know the plot, so every sentence you do understand lands. Dubbing studios also work in neutral standard German, clearly spoken, with no dialect to untangle.

So Langvie turns the order around. It lists every word a film uses, with its level and a meaning, and you learn those words before you press play.

The films by level

A film's level is the band that covers 80% of what it says, counted by how often each word is spoken. Right now that puts 7 at B1, 17 at B2, 11 at C1. Call the levels estimates: a word's own level comes from the Goethe Institut lists up to B1, and from how common it is above that.

Where to start

The easiest films in the library are One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Extr@ auf Deutsch, season 1, Lola rennt. Start with one of those at A2, and learn its fifty most frequent words before you watch. Those are the words the film repeats most, so each card pays off several times in one evening.

From B1, pick by taste. Each film's page lists the words above B1 it says most, which shows how big the gap is before you commit two hours.

How a film becomes a deck

Open a film and press Learn Top-50 words for this movie. The words enter your deck with their article and plural, a recording, and the line from the film where each is said.
