German present tense verb endings.
German verbs change their endings depending on who is doing the action. You will use these present tense forms whenever you talk about yourself, your family, or everyday activities.
The infinitive and the verb stem
The dictionary form of a verb is the infinitive, which ends in -en or occasionally -n. When you remove -en, you are left with the stem, which carries the verb meaning and receives the endings.
| Infinitive | Stem | Ending |
|---|---|---|
| wohnen | wohn- | -en |
| kommen | komm- | -en |
| heißen | heiß- | -en |
| arbeiten | arbeit- | -en |
- Tom und Anna wohnen hier.Tom and Anna live here.
- Wir kommen gemeinsam. We come together.
Regular present tense endings
Add the regular personal endings -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, and -en to the stem. The formal address Sie always takes the capitalized pronoun and the exact same -en ending as wir and sie.
| Pronoun | wohnen | kommen |
|---|---|---|
| ich | wohne | komme |
| du | wohnst | kommst |
| er / sie / es | wohnt | kommt |
| wir | wohnen | kommen |
| ihr | wohnt | kommt |
| sie / Sie | wohnen | kommen |
- Ich wohne hier allein.I live here alone.
- Er kommt auch.He comes too.
Stems ending in d, t, s, ß, or z
Stems ending in d or t insert an extra e before -st and -t to make pronunciation easier. Stems ending in s, ß, x, or z add only -t for du, and verbs in -eln drop the inner e in the ich form.
| Pronoun | kommen | arbeiten | heißen |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | komme | arbeite | heiße |
| du | kommst | arbeitest | heißt |
| er / sie / es | kommt | arbeitet | heißt |
| wir | kommen | arbeiten | heißen |
| ihr | kommt | arbeitet | heißt |
| sie / Sie | kommen | arbeiten | heißen |
- Du arbeitest hier sehr gut.You work here very well.
- Er heißt Tom und ist nett.He is called Tom and is nice.
Questions with question words
In questions starting with a question word, the conjugated verb takes the second position immediately after the question word. The subject pronoun comes directly after the verb.
| Question word | Verb | Pronoun |
|---|---|---|
| Wo | wohnst | du? |
| Woher | kommen | Sie? |
| Wie | heißt | er? |
- Wo wohnst du?Where do you live?
- Woher kommen Sie?Where do you come from?
Exceptions to remember
- Verb stems ending in d or t insert an extra e before st and t. Du arbeitest hier.
- Verb stems ending in s, ß, x, or z take only t for du instead of st. Du heißt Tom.
- Verbs ending in -eln drop the internal e in the ich form. Ich lächle hier.
