Negating nouns with kein

Use kein when negating a noun that has the indefinite article ein or no article at all. The word kein takes the exact same endings as ein.

• Ich habe kein Brot.I have no bread.
• Das ist keine Butter.That is not butter.

Negating verbs and adjectives with nicht

Use nicht to negate verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. To negate a simple verb, nicht sits at the end of the sentence, but it sits directly before an adjective.

• Der Käse ist nicht billig.The cheese is not cheap.
• Ich bestelle nicht.I do not order.

Negating nouns with a definite article

When a noun has a definite article like der, die, or das, do not use kein. Place nicht directly before the definite article instead.

• Das ist nicht der Supermarkt.That is not the supermarket.
• Ich nehme nicht das Fleisch.I do not take the meat.

Exceptions to remember

• English speakers often wrongly use nicht instead of kein before nouns without articles. Wir haben keine Milch.
• Do not use kein with standalone adjectives when no noun follows. Das Obst ist nicht frisch.
• A question with nicht or kein is answered yes with doch, not ja. Hast du keine Milch? Doch, ich habe Milch.
